Skill of the Week: Milk a Cow

A man's ability to adapt to any situation is an important part of his masculinity. We're republishing an illustrated guide from our archive every Sunday so that you can improve your manly knowledge week by week.

The days of milking cows as a common chore, like washing the dishes, are long gone for most men and soon-to-be men. Milking cows by hand, which is now mostly done with high-tech machines in commercial dairies was once a way for farmers and their families to form close relationships with the animals they relied on every day. You're unlikely to find yourself in a situation where you have to milk a dairy cow if you live in the city, unless you are living in a post-apocalyptic world with plenty of healthy milk-producing cows and you need some ice-cream. That's not what it's all about. It's not about that. The point is that milking cows by hand is an ancient tradition deeply rooted in our agricultural ancestors. Learning how to do this is as much a matter of preserving the knowledge as it it about actually doing it.
