In the last few years, we have seen a rise in a kind of anti-productivity trend. Knowledge workers who are burned out or feel that their work is meaningless and tedious have talked more about "quietly quitting" and doing nothing.
My guest would argue, that in fact, the problem is not productivity, but rather that people want to be productive. He says that our approach to productivity is broken and must be changed.
Cal Newport, a professor in computer science, is the author of Deep Work and Digital Minimalism. His most recent book is Slow Productivity, The Lost Art Of Accomplishment without Burnout. Today on the show, Cal explains what's led to the rise of what he calls "pseudo-productivity" and the fallout when we apply the structures of the industrial revolution to modern work. Cal explains the principles and tactics behind the "slow productivity" approach to working, and explains how you can implement them regardless of whether you are employed by a company or work for yourself. We talk about why you should do less work in the short term to achieve more in the long run, how artificial it is to work at the same intensity each day, how to add more seasonality to your work and other ways to improve balance.
