Skill of the Week: Effectively Ice Drinks in a Cooler

A man's ability to adapt to any situation is an important part of his masculinity. We'll be republishing an illustrated guide from our archive every Sunday so that you can improve your manly knowledge week by week.

You can ensure that your guests are satisfied at a BBQ by bringing a large cooler filled with soda and beer. There's not much more to it, but there are other ways that are less expensive and more effective of keeping these drinks cold and easily accessible.

It is less effective to put the bottles and cans on top of a large mound of ice. The bottles and cans won't be chilled enough that way. It's also not a good idea to bury the bottles in ice. People's hands can get cut and cold when they dig to find a drink.

Fill the cooler with an 80/20 mix of water and ice. Put the bottles/cans into the cooler so that their bodies are in the ice but their necks/tops stick out. This allows your guests to grab the drinks easily without getting their fingers wet, cold or nicked.

If you are in a rush to cool your drinks down, spin them around very gently. Spin the bottles/cans every few minutes to distribute the liquid already chilled.
