Odds and Ends: June 21, 2024

Do you find that your sleep has been less restful lately? Sleeping less and getting less rest? The summer season could be the culprit. According to a study published in 2011, seasonal differences in sleep are observed. The study participants slept one hour more in winter than in summer and experienced 30 minutes fewer REM sleep during the summer. Humans seem to require less sleep at this time of the year. The study involved people with sleep disorders, but further research is needed to determine if the findings are applicable to people with normal sleeping patterns. However, there's a high probability that they will. The subjective and objective quality of sleep affects our perception of how rested we are. If we believe we have slept less than what we should, we might feel more tired. If you have been worrying about your sleep lately, don't worry. Just adjust your expectations. You might be getting enough rest for the season. Researchers suggest that we should adjust our sleep schedules according to the season. We may plan to spend more time sleeping in January and less in June.

Charles Bronson Japanese Mandom Cologne Commercials (70s).Charles Bronson had a strong manly persona. In the 1970s he did some very manly ads for a Japanese cologne with a great name, Mandom. They're amazing. They're amazing. These commercials would be my answer if someone asked me what I thought was the ideal aesthetic. I want to live like Charles Bronson splashing around on Mandom in the 1970s.

The Agony and the Esstasy, by Irving Stone. Jon Tyson, a guest on the AoM podcast and a fan of "the five shifts of manhood," gave me a copy of the first edition of this novel last year. It is a biography of Renaissance artist Michelangelo. It was a great book. The Agony and the Ecstasy was a great read. I learned a lot of Renaissance history, and Stone's insights into the discipline required to create great works were inspirational. Stone portrays an artist who combined spirituality, genius and grit to create some of the greatest paintings and statues of all time. Highly recommended.

Fage 0% Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt. Fage 0% nonfat plain Greek yogurt is a great low-calorie food with a high protein content that can be eaten in many different ways. I consume two 32-ounce tubs of yogurt a week. One serving contains 90 calories and 18g of protein. This means that 72 calories of 90 calories in Fage come from protein. Amazing! It's like a protein concentrate that you can spoon. You also get gut-friendly, probiotics. It's tangy and I like to use it that way, on tacos or mixed with milk and adobe peppers for a burrito sauce. For my mid-morning snacks, I also enjoy Fage 0% with blueberries and oatmeal. I am still exploring the many ways that I can use this high-protein, versatile food. Get ya some!

Quote of the week

You should not be afraid of change in general, but you shouldn't like it for its sake.
