On D-Day (June 6, 1944), 160,000 soldiers participated in the Normandy invasion. Currently, only a few thousand veterans remain alive. The youngest are in their 90s. Garrett Graff, who has compiled the voices of the millions of combatants, leaders, and others who were in motion 80 years ago across Europe, captured their voices and have passed from the living history.
Garrett draws on his project to sift through and synthesize 5,000 oral histories to take us back to the day that was arguably one of the most important in modern history. He helps unravel the true epic sweep of the operations, which were hard to comprehend even then and have become more difficult with time. We discuss the incredible planning that went into D-Day. We also talk about some myths surrounding D-Day and the sacrifices made by the heroes of D-Day.
