Fathers are often viewed as secondary parents, or even superfluous.
My guest claims that fathers saved the human species and are still doing so today.
Anna Machin is a evolutionary anthropologist and pioneer of fatherhood research. She is also the author of The Life of Dad. We discuss the importance of fathers throughout human history, as well as how they continue to play a major role in teaching children the skills to become independent and to navigate the world outside their families. We also discuss the physiological changes that occur when a man is a father, and how dads have the same biological predisposition to parenting as mothers. We discuss the experience of fatherhood in the second half. Anna explains how long it takes for a man bond with his baby and to transition into fatherhood. She also explains how roughhousing helps build that bond and develop your child's resilience. Our conversation ends with a discussion on how Mom and Dad's relationship affects their parenting style and how that impacts building a strong, healthy family.
