Podcast #1,004: The Sunscreen Debate — Are We Blocking Our Way to Better Health?

The health effects of sun exposure are probably a mix bag. Sun exposure can help your body produce vitamin D, but it can also cause skin cancer.

Dermatologists often recommend that to avoid this dilemma, you should avoid sun exposure whenever possible, use sunscreen when necessary, and take a vitamin-D supplement in order to compensate for your lack of sunshine.

This advice, in trying to solve a single problem, may lead to many more and contribute to the ill health of Westerners.

Rowan Jacobsen will discuss the benefits of sun exposure today. He is a science reporter who has spent many years researching the health effects of sunlight. These benefits are not solely a result of vitamin D production and cannot be achieved with pills. We discuss the other factors that are at play in ultraviolet radiation’s positive effects on blood pression, autoimmune disease, insulin resistance and mood. We discuss how to balance these benefits with the risk of developing skin cancer. We also explore why Australian health officials, who have the highest skin cancer rate in the world changed their sun exposure recommendations.
