It has always been important for men to have the skills and knowledge to deal with any situation. We're republishing an illustrated guide from our archive every Sunday so that you can improve your manly knowledge week by week.
In survival situations, there are many ways to create a fire using everyday items. Makeshift techniques can be used to save your life. From refracting the light from a soda bottle's bottom to short-circuiting a cell phone battery, you can use what is available in your environment. The process of creating fire using a water-bottle is similar to that of making fire with magnifying glasses: the water-bottle acts as a focal point, focusing sunlight to a bright point. This heats paper or other tinder quickly to the point where it ignites.
It's important to understand that making fire using a water-filled bottle is not an easy task. You'll need to practice and spend time getting the bottle in the right position. If the sun is not at its best because it's too late or hidden behind clouds, you may be disappointed. Use clear bottles that have smooth, curved caps and are filled with clear fluid to maximize your success. Textures and colors can interfere with your ability to focus light. Paper with dark ink is best for tinder. The dark ink absorbs the heat and ignites it faster.
