Podast #1,012: The Science of Motivating Your Kids (And Any Young Adult)

You may be a parent, teen, teen-ager, manager, or coach who works, lives, and loves with young people. Sometimes, they act in a way that is difficult to understand. It can also be frustrating trying to get them to behave in a positive manner.

These challenges are often attributed to the hormones and brains of tweens, young adults, and twenty-somethings. My guest, however, would argue that the way in which mentors approach young adults is often to blame.

David Yeager, a developmental psychology expert and author of 10 to 25, The Science of Motivating Youth: A Groundbreaking Approach for Leading the Next Generation - And Making Your Life Easier is an expert in motivating young people. David Yeager and I discussed the "mentors' dilemma" today on the show. This is the idea that either you have to be an authoritarian tough guy who holds young people to high standards, or a softie who doesn't crush the spirit of a child -- and how to navigate this unnecessary dichotomy. David discusses the importance of knowing what drives young adults and what causes them to disengage and shut down. He also explains what parents, teachers and other mentors should do to make young adults feel inspired, motivated and ready to contribute.
