Stretching, lifting weights, and running are all exercises that you can do to train your body and improve its strength, cardiovascular health, agility, and overall fitness.
You can also expand the capacity of your soul by performing exercises. In this case, "spiritual discipline" is a term used to describe practices such as fasting, silent meditation, self-examination and study.
John Mark Comer, a pastor and spiritual director, approaches the spiritual discipline from a Christian perspective. He sees them as habits and practices that are part of the "way of Jesus," which allow people to open deeper layers to grace, and to access the transformative power necessary to become "a person who loves."
The practices of spiritual discipline can be found in different religions and philosophies, including Stoicism. They can be used by people with diverse backgrounds to develop their inner strength, to center themselves amid chaos, to find greater meaning, to subdue lower desires, and to achieve higher ideals.
John Mark introduces spiritual disciplines today on the show. They can be a form of resistance that allows us to create our own values and rhythms of life instead of allowing them to dictate our lives.
