Flag Day is one of those holidays that doesn't receive much attention. Flag Day is celebrated on the 14th of June every year. It commemorates the adoption by the Second Continental Congress of the Stars and Stripes flag as the official American flag.
Flag Day, though not a federally recognized holiday, is observed by patriotic ceremonies and the display of American flags outside homes and businesses. Flag Day is also a day to teach people proper flag etiquette.
How to fold the American Flag is one of the flag etiquette points.
In various situations, the American flag is folded in a triangular form to show respect and dignity. The triangular fold is done after the flag has been lowered, especially at sunset, in order to store it properly. This fold is used at patriotic and military ceremonies such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and military funerals where the flag is given to the family. The triangular fold is meant to pay homage to the significance of the flag. It also pays homage to Revolutionary War soldiers by resembling a tricorne hat.
