The men are in a waiting state.
The vision is vague, but the feeling of what life will be like eventually is strong. Perhaps this vision includes a happy spouse and children. A fulfilling and interesting career is a given. A group of good friends. An exciting hobby. Perhaps a name. Perhaps some fame.
The average man is convinced that he will become someone; that his hopes and dreams will be realized; that with time, his ship will arrive.
He waits with eagerness for the vessel, certain that things will begin to happen for him after he graduates from college.
His waiting has become more anxious as he approaches middle age. However, he is confident that the right circumstances and opportunities will come his way any day.
He realizes in his later years that his life is not going the way he wanted it to.
Unexpectedly, bad things like accidents, illnesses and tragedies will strike.
Nothing good happens
You have to go after it, fetch it, swim out and seize it.
