Odds & Ends: June 28, 2024

The Federalist Papers. Next week is Independence Day in the U.S., so I thought that it would be an appropriate time to review some founding documents with a civic-minded perspective. So I bought a cheap book of The Federalist Papers to read. The Federalist Papers is a collection of 85 essays that were written between 1787-1788 by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison to support the U.S. Constitution. The Federalist papers argue for a stronger central government in place of the weaker Articles of Confederation. They emphasize the need for an unified nation that can manage defense, trade and other national interest. The essays' best parts were the ones where the authors discussed group psychology and the best way to deal with "factions". They concluded that while you cannot stop them, you can mitigate the damage they may cause. The Federalist Papers are surprisingly easy to read despite their dense political philosophy. You should read this book if you are an American. You will gain a deeper understanding of the Constitution.

Hitch Hair Clay. When I grow my hair long, it can become really frizzy and poofy. Hitch Pomade is the best product I've ever used. Thad Forrester, a barber from New York City, developed Hitch. You may remember Thad if you have been following AoM since the beginning. I made some YouTube videos together with him about how to speak to your barber. Thad has been testing Hitch on me for several years and now he is releasing it to the general public. Hitch gives my hair a little hold while maintaining its natural flow. Hitch reduces frizz because it adds moisture. All Day Clay is my favorite. Grab yourself a jar.

The Fall Guy Recently, our family watched The Fall Guy. We enjoyed it. Ryan Gosling is a stuntman that has to find the missing movie star for whom he acts as a stunt double. The plot is essentially a way to set up some awesome stunts. The film is hilarious and action-packed. And the on-screen relationship between Gosling, Emily Blunt and others is fantastic. This movie doesn't have a big message. This movie is just for fun. It's like a throwback of those popcorny summer action films from the 80s and 1990s. We need more like that.

Researchers find no evidence that sperm count is dropping. In the last decade, Western men have been subjected to a lot more alarmism and hand-wringing about declining sperm count. There have been books written about the doom of humanity. It's funny that I have come across articles from Esquire in the 1970s that said the same thing. They also predicted that we would be living in Children of Men by the year 2000. A new research paper questions the widely held belief about men's sperm counts declining worldwide. Researchers found that there was no significant change in the concentration of sperm between 2017 and 2022. They did, however, observe a decrease in motile (swimming sperm) from 2019 onwards. This could be linked to lifestyle modifications during COVID-19.
