10 Mental Health Rules From the 1930s

Note: The Cleveland Academy of Medicine hosted a contest in the 1930s to find the best rules on mental health. The rules that were chosen by Dr. Joseph Fetterman, a psychiatrist, and published in the bulletin of the Cleveland Academy of Medicine, are shared below.

Mental Health Rules

Have a hobby: Choose a pursuit that you enjoy; sports or nature are the best.

Develop a philosophy: adapt yourself to your social and spiritual environment.

Share your thoughts: cultivate companionship through thought and feeling. Confide, confess, consult.

Face your fears: Analyze and dismiss them with daylight.

Balance fantasy with reality: Imagine but always face the facts.

Beware of alluring escapes: Alcohol, barbitals, and opiates may prove to be unfaithful friends.

Exercise: Golf, walking, swimming, etc. Muscles need to be active.

LOVE BUT LOVE WISELY : Sex can be a flame that if uncontrolled, will scorch. If properly directed, it will ignite the torch of eternal life.

Don't get swept up in a whirlpool of worries. Call for help early. Your doctor is on standby to help you.

TRUST IN THE TIME: Be hopeful and patient; the time is an excellent therapist.
