It has always been important for men to have the skills and knowledge to deal with any situation. We're republishing an illustrated guide from our archive every Sunday so that you can improve your manly knowledge week by week.
If you are in the wilderness, it is important to protect and store your food properly. This will prevent Yogi Bear or other wild animals from stealing those meals you love. It can be crucial to your safety in some cases. A night in the woods can be deadly if a grizzly enters your tent after snatching a midnight snack.
It is important to make your food out of reach and/or impossible for animals to get at. Many car-camping areas have metal food lockers that you can use to store your food. (Some parks prohibit storing food inside your car because bears could cause serious damage to it if they get in. You can buy a bear bag (which is often required in certain parks in the West), or a bear canister to keep your food. Bear canisters are made of strong plastic or fabrics that have been tested and designed to keep bears out. You can use the method above if you do not have a food locker or a canister. The bag should be placed high enough so that it is out of the reach of bears but not too close to a branch of a tree to allow squirrels to get to it.
Don't forget to remove any crumbs and pack toothpaste and deodorant in your bag along with the food.
