Sunday Firesides: The 3 Horizons of Purpose

When we think of purpose, we usually think of the overarching goal in our lives; our true calling. The thing that we were meant to do on this earth.

Each individual's purpose is more complex than that. It spans three horizons, from the immediate and concrete to distant and transcendent.

Our first goal is to transform anarchy into ordered chaos. We are here to fight against a universe which is constantly moving towards entropy. We can prevent decay and chaos from engulfing us and others by performing small acts of maintenance every day. We live for those brief, shining moments of order in the world.

Our goal is to turn intentions into action in the second horizon. We are driven to convert potential energy into kinetic. We all have ideas that we either follow through on or ignore. We strive to minimize the woulda, coulda and shouldas of life, while maximising satisfaction from following through.

This is the third horizon, where we discover Purpose, with a capital P. It's the reason for our existence, the desire to make a meaningful, unique contribution to the universe. The intersection between a need and a person's unique gifts is where this purpose comes from. This could be creating a groundbreaking invention or a best-selling book. It could also mean being a parent, a leader, or a buoyer for loved ones.

It can be challenging to discover the third horizon, but there is one thing you must do to get there: work hard in the first two.
